This workshop is specifically designed for social workers who work with Native American populations, including tribal communities. It focuses on the critical issue of child abuse, emphasizing cultural sensitivity and community involvement in prevention and intervention strategies.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidenced-informed and best-practice interactive and directive, yet facilitative communication style, designed to support individuals/dyads (micro), groups/families (mezzo), and communities/organizations (macro) in their exploration and resolution of ambivalence to change.

This Teach-in is a discussion about health equity and the complex, systemic nature of substance use—addressing both macro and micro issues in our communities. The impact of substance use challenges and effective, trauma-informed approaches to treatment, particularly motivational interviewing will be explored.

Positionality refers to the social and cultural factors that shape an individual’s perspective and experiences, such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc. In addition to understanding positionality, child welfare professionals need to identify boundaries around their work.
